A NOTE ON ST. JOSEPH VAZ SHRINE
- Joseph Vaz Shrine, Mudipu is situated in Bantwal Taluk of South Canara in state of Karnataka 25 km to the east of Mangalore. The shrine situated on the top of so called ‘Miracle Hill’ of Mudipu is a famous pilgrim place for all the religious communities. Pilgrims come here all through out the year and get Gods blessings and mental peace and even international pilgrims come too.
- Joseph Vaz was a “Son of India” but worked in Srilanka as a missionary and became the “Apostle of Srilanka” for his untiring evangelizing works to promote Catholic Faith. But the sad thing was that his life and works came into limelight in later centuries. He was in Mangalore in the year’s 1681 to1684. As a commemoration we celebrate the Annual feast of ST. Joseph Vaz every year in our Shrine.
The Way of the Cross is held on the Palm Sunday every year. Thousands of devotees participate in this holy pilgrimage and there by receive God’s mercy and blessings. The procession proceeds from MudipuChurch to Shrine in joining in the Lord’s passion and the death.
Through the intercession of ST. Joseph Vaz, this shrine has brought a lot of spiritual revival and renewal in the lives of numerous pilgrims within the few years of its establishment. The shrine is gaining place in the hearts of the pilgrims. We provide lunch for all the devotees on every Friday. We also have plans to extend free meals for all in weekdays.
At present Fr. Benjamin Pinto is the parish priest and the director of ST. Joseph Vaz Shrine Church.
